Doctor Who: Radio Free Skaro

With a new podcast almost every week, Radio Free Skaro is possibly the most prolific, irreverent (but never irrelevant) Doctor Who podcast on the internet today. Since August 2006, hosts Warren (in Vancouver, BC) and Steven (in Edmonton, AB) have provided listeners with their brand of amusing Doctor Who praise and punishment. A year later, Chris (in London, UK) was added to the team, and The Three Who Rule were born.

With well over 130 episodes under their collective belts, Radio Free Skaro provides an entertaining and diverting listen for the diehard and/or casual Doctor Who fan. New episodes usually appear on Sundays or Mondays, following a loose format of the three hosts discussing the news and events of the past week in the worlds of Doctor Who, Torchwood, and the Sarah Jane Adventures. They have also recorded special commentary podcasts for classic series and new series episodes of Doctor Who.

All previous episodes are available on the iTunes feed, as well as the Radio Free Skaro homepage - www.radiofreeskaro.com.

It's not often that the Three Who Rule spend more than a minute dismissing Torchwood out of hand, much less being interested in a new series of everyone's tolerated younger, ganglier cousin to Doctor Who. But that strange event is precisely what happened (explained away with string theory and many a complicated equation, most likely), along with some pre Comic Con banter and oh yes, a commentary on The Empty Child.

Check out the show notes at www.radiofreeskaro.com.

Radio Free Skaro #145 - The Lament of Steven

Steven, one mighty pillar of the tripod that is the Three Who Rule, doesn't often succumb to the base emotions. Indeed, compared to the gutter-dwelling antics of Pedantor and the frankly borderline illegal conduct of Warren, Steven's unflappable facade is nigh-invulnerable. But when the fate of Pete Tyler in "Father's Day" comes into play, all propriety goes out the window. Tune in and hear his descent into madness...if you dare.

Katrina was back in the fold again this week (replacing Warren, whoâs
busy blogging in Banff this week), with the main focus of the Three Who
Rule being to provide comments on Series 1 episode The Long Game. The
trio never once went more than ten minutes without discussing the
episode at hand â a new record? Along the way, various bits of news
were covered, including the explosion of fandom (aka the closing of
Doctor Who Forum at Outpost Gallifrey), the shrapnel of which, it was
determined, landed well short of affecting your intrepid hosts.

In a desperate bid to find someone who could give an unequivocal thumbs up to Series 1 tome World War Three, the RFS gang numbered four (Warren, Steven, Chris, and Katrina) for one of the few times in history to record a commentary for the episode. The result? No thumbs up were given, but neither were there definite thumbs down, mostly because the hosts were more encumbered in dealing with various innuendos, intended or otherwise.

With the regular hosts of Radio Free Skaro jumping ship left and right in order to avoid commentating on perceived Series One low point Aliens of London, it was left to Steven, Katrina, and, at the last minute, Chris to try and find something worthy to talk about for the Slitheen's debut appearance in Doctor Who lore. They succeeded in not going too terribly off topic, although the intrusion of the subtitle track from the 1964 classic series story Marco Polo didn't help. Have a listen for yourselves!

"The Unquiet Dead" was the episode next in line for commentary, but the intrepid investigations of the Three Who Rule have discovered a hidden message within this tale of Dickens, aliens, and reanimated corpses. Yes, it seems Russel T. Davies sees fit to force his sick preferences for matter in neither solid or liquid but gaseous(!) form down the throats of the public. Well, not on our watch, dear listener.
Radio Free Skaro #131 - The Sweet Serenade of Sarcastor

With all three of the Three Who Rule firmly back in their respective command chairs, it was back to good old fashioned sniping, infighting and jocularity as Pedantor made battle with both his old nemesis Rubbishor and a new, more deadly enemy named Sarcastor. Somehow in the midst of this pantheon of perfidious poltroonery some discussion of Doctor Who came into play, but not by any means on purpose.

Not strictly Doctor Who this week, but a cool interview all the same. The local chapter of SIGGRAPH (a group of computer graphics geniuses) brought Industrial Light and Magic special effects legend Dennis Muren to Vancouver, and Warren was able to interview him. Apologies for the dodgy audio during Warren's questions....the details are too boring to go into, but at any rate Muren's thoughts on visual effects, art and the motion picture industry are the good stuff.

With only Comic Relief and a mini-SJA episode (story?) starring a flatulent Ronnie Corbett, the Three Who Rule had little in the way of solid material to mold into gorgeous verbal statuary with their mellifluous locution this week. But thanks to the power of digression, they managed to unleash a torrent of nonsense almost unparalleled in the annals of Skarosian myth and legend. And all of it for you, dear listeners.

Radio Free Skaro - Gallifrey '09 Podcast Panel

At Gallifrey '09, three of the most preeminent Doctor Who podcasts around - Podshock, Tachyon TV, and Radio Free Skaro - converged for a tell all panel entitled "So You Want To Podcast Doctor Who?", ready to dispense vital information to a room full of eager fans wanting to venture into the cutthroat world of podcasting.

With three panelists per podcast, the panel was chock full of on-air talent; it looked like the Yalta Conference of podcasting. Of course, occuring at 11:00 AM on a Saturday morning, the energy in the room was far from palpable. And the party only really began once Damon from Tachyon TV started dispensing beer to all who wanted one (some of the panelists had, at that point, barely stopped drinking since the previous afternoon). But the panel's main goal was achieved - there actually more people in the audience than on the panel.

Have a listen to the audio from the event here.

After a dusty couple of weeks battling Sutekh, the Hand of Sutekh, and mysterious fez-clad villains, Warren returned to North American soil from Egypt a little dusty but still full of verve for all things Who. Of course, now that the new Doctor has been announced, along with the airing of the Next Doctor, there was little in the way of real news to discuss, so the Three Who Rule made do with fawning over the impossibly cute Character Options figures due later this year, along with digressions into the works of Clint Eastwood and Tombstone, Kurt Russell's mustachioed magnum opus.

While Warren battles gun-wielding, fez-wearing servants of Sutekh, Steven and Chris discuss the big news of the announcement of David Tennant's replacement in Who's eponymous role. The Two of the Three compare the nascent Mr. Smith's ascension with the oncoming of past Doctors of yore and ultimately conclude it's far too early to know what to expect from this whippersnapper. The discussion by way of commentary of Ghost Light also occurs as the remaining hosts take on the much-overlooked Season 26 story, no doubt to the delight of the erstwhile McCoy-bashing Mr. Frey.

With Warren in Egypt seeking to be the plaything of Sutekh, it was left
to Chris and Steven to hash out their opinions of the recent Doctor Who
Christmas special "The Next Doctor". As if an RFS episode without
Warren wasn't weird enough, both Chris and Steven were actually in the
same room to record this week's installment. The resulting proximity
meant that the duo stayed remarkably on topic, but still managed to
find time to comment on Survivors, Coronation Street and Canada's
chances at the World Junior hockey tournament. Behold!

The Three Who Rule were all back on terra firma (ie. North America) this week, and the usual Who-ish banter of course centred around the imminent showing of "The Next Doctor", due December 25th on UK TVs and computers worldwide. But that didn't stop the jaunty (and in the case of Chris, jet-lagged) japemeisters from venturing forth on the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (conclusion: crap), along with an altogether too long talk about the merits of various Star Trek series, before sauntering back to the matter at hand. Next week, Chris and Steven are left to their own devices, as Warren wanders to Egypt to battle Sutekh and save 1980 from Armageddon, seen through the TARDIS doors as terrible model photography and CSO.

in the middle of a sentence. The hygiene of certain Sex in the City

Doctor Who news headlines were hashed over, giggled at, and finally
shunted aside as your gallant crew went completely off the rails.

And so it's come to this. At long last the RFS crew reaches
"Journey's End," the final episode of Series Four, and a story that
nicely sums up Who scribe Gareth Roberts term of "anticipointment." So
much potential, frittered away in a fruitless wasting of the Rose story
arc and Benny Hill-esque dispatchment of the Daleks. Still, Julian
Bleach's Davros and the sad fate of Donna Noble rescued the episode
from the Trash-Bin of Utter Contempt (next door neighbour to the Gun of
Spite) and gave our three heroes much gristle to chew over, spit out,
and look at askance.

making this one of our longer prognostications. And we sort of stayed

Not a bad story overall, enhanced by our analysis of Jo's mental state (lukewarm), the secret life of Sir Reginald (tawdry) and the gaseous state of Chris's belly.

episode of Radio Free Skaro, which featured almost an hour's worth of
banter even before we got around to commentary on "Robot", Tom Baker's
debut story. Much as the crew has a certain fondness for this tale of
fascistic scientists, errant droids and wonky regenerative antics, they
were unsparing in their criticism of the silliness on screen...and
Warren said "MADOC!" a lot. Enjoy!

Since Talons is longer than a trip on a Victorian steamer to the colonies, we decided to split the commentary into two parts. And, as threatened last week, we actually did a commentary for "The Brain of Morbius", one of Tom Baker's more violent excursions from the classic series. This is by far the longest RFS we've ever done, so let us know by telegraph, carrier pigeon or new-fangled electronic mail if we've jumped the shark or whether you'd like to hear more of our extended ramblings on the Classic Series (which, given the semi-hiatus next year, you surely will in one form or another.)

The news landscape this week was as barren as a Welsh quarry, and about as interesting, and yet the RFS malcontents managed to blither out a substantial amount of analysis on the newest episode of Torchwood, as well as wax nostalgically about such classics as the Horns of Nimon and the Nightmare of Eden, as well as denigrate the good name of most of the countries in Europe in the name of comedy.

Radio Free Skaro #73 - The Curmudgeon Factor

With much news to discuss and an unwelcome loss of sleep due to Daylight Savings Time for the North American portion of the RFS crew, the grump factor was pretty high in this episode, making for the delightful sniping and back and forth beloved by...well, by the hosts, at any rate. Hopefully our wonderful audience found our snarky comments as amusing as we did. We also found time to "meh" it up about the latest Torchwood between the baleful glances and acidic insults.

Radio Free Skaro #72 - Invasion of the Third Guy

At a record-shattering hour and a half, this episode of Radio Free Skaro delves into the recent <a href="http://www.tenthplanet.co.uk/invasion/">Invasion 2008</a> convention held over the weekend in the UK, and attended by our very own Third Guy. Thanks to him, we also have audio of the one, the only Tom Baker holding court with many fans on matters great and trivial. There's also some nonsense about Torchwood and dribbles of news, but it's mostly recountings of madcap adventure amongst the Whovians.

Radio Free Skaro #71 - now airing on BBC 3 last week

Narrowly avoiding the technical snafus of last week, the RFS crew rose to the occasion and produced an hour of witty banter, insults and of course the eagerly awaited pub rumours that were so cruelly stolen from our audience last week by the vagaries of Skype. Besides covering the latest Torchwood (which aired last week on BBC 2 and this week on BBC 3 and two years previous on stone tablets and oh I give up already...) we talked about the latest news, along with the usual digressions and nonsense we've become so very famous for.

Radio Free Skaro #68 - Keeping Fans at arm's length since 2006

The BBC threw us a nice softball by releasing a "cinema-exclusive" season 4 trailer on February 1st, which someone promptly uploaded to YouTube. The RFS took delight in analyzing and dissecting this tasty morsel, speculating wildly on what are likely innocuous shots of no real relevance. We also discussed the newest episode of Torchwood, hashed over Russell T Davies declaration that he keeps fans at arm's length, and of course went our trademark off-topic ramblings as per usual.

Along the way we discussed much news, reviewed the newest Sarah Jane Adventure, and tried to figure out if the rumours of Peter Davison donning his old costume and joining with David Tennant for the upcoming Children in Need special were in fact true, only to have the BBC confirm it mere moments after our podcast.
Radio Free Skaro #51 - the Podcast of Blood

Despite Chris (the "Third Guy") being set upon by some sort of throat ailment, the RFS crew set forth and valiantly commentated on "The Family of Blood," the second part of Paul Cornell's season 3 magnum opus and a corking bit of Who into the bargain. We also miraculously rescued 14 minutes of news from the doldrums of between-season uneventfulness.

A truly momentous milestone, as we celebrate our 50th episode of Radio Free Skaro with...well, nothing really. Nothing, that is, except a corking bit of episode-ery known as "Human Nature," one of the highlights of Season 3.
Radio Free Skaro #49 - is about 42

Steven, Warren and the supremely jaunty Chris tackle 42, a madcap romp through a spaceship hurtling towards a dying sun, for this the 49th episode of Radio Free Skaro. We also tackle the recent announcement of a "gap year" for the series involving three specials in 2009, along with confirmation of the fourth and fifth series. And of course we ramble off-topic as usual about matters of great import.

The Third Guy returns as Chris Burgess joins us once again for our take on "The Lazurus Experiment", a Seaon 3 time-filler redeemed by cool scorpion effects and the fact that it came right after a disastrous Dalek two-parter. We went pretty far off-topic in this one, even breaching the shores of the dreaded Coronation Street (at length), but hopefully our jib-jabber will prove somewhat entertaining nonetheless.

The episode under fire in our commentary may be nothing to write home about, but this week's episode of Radio Free Skaro was indeed special in that it included Chris Burgess, our perennial silent partner and Fifth Beatle. Chris threw in his two bits on Evolution of the Daleks (three guesses as to how he felt about this snoozefest) and managed to inspire awe and fright in both Warren and Steven with his vast and sinister knowledge of all things Whovian.

Warren and Steven tear into what was definitely the lowlight of the season, Daleks in Manhattan, which had all the potential for greatness but failed to live up to its promise every step of the way. At least it gave us ample ammunition for slagging during our commentary, which we did with great relish and abandon. We also cover bits and pieces of news, including the as of yet unconfirmed (but oh so tasty) rumour that Ben Kingsley might play Davros in Season 4.

Radio Free Skaro #45 - Gridlock commentary and other sundry bits

One of our favorites from Season Three goes under the microscope as Warren and Steven subject "Gridlock" to their witty, nay brilliant commentary. We also veered off into a few other topics off the top, including "Life on Mars" (which Warren is watching and quite enjoying, thank you very much) and the differences between the look of British and American TV. Fore more detail on that subject, check out the discussion on Metafilter, found here:

Radio Free Skaro #41 - Last of the Meh

Our mortal enemy the echo once again victimized us, at least for the first half of the podcast. But it was either re-record everything (not an option at this late hour, and our schedule won't allow another time to record for the rest of the week) or just go with it and beg forgiveness. So we throw ourselves at the mercy of you, our fans, and remind you that we do this show for free. :)

Anyway, we jabbered on about Lat of the Time Lords, which was not so good, as well as took a look at the season as a whole and up and coming news regarding season 4. Next up, Episode 42 (two weeks hence, Steven is a busy man) where we'll look at Douglas Adams contribution to both Who and the culture as a whole. Sorry about the echo. Sorry.

The drums! Glimpses of Gallifrey, the Master at his hammy finest, a Prime Minister gone mad and a wizened Doctor...the Sound of Drums was a chaotic grab bag of fun. And so was this podcast, as Steven and Warren ramble with little rhyme or reason and speculate wildly as to the future of the show, the nature of the Toclafane, and other ponderous matters. Great effects, imaginative characters, humor and some genuinely moving moments make for one of the best bits o' Who in the new series. Lovely! Next week, the Daleks invade Manhattan, as does Warren. We covered Smith and Jones, the Shakespeare Code, and veered al over the conversational map to parts unknown, as would any two jaunty fellows faced with take 3 of a podcast. These are the lengths we'll go to for you, dear listeners! Enjoy!

Radio Free Skaro #29 - Smith and Jones

For the first time in the history of the podcast (other than the Runaway Bride), we've got a new episode of honest to goodness Doctor Who to talk about. Smith and Jones, the first episode in Who's third season, premiered on Saturday night in England and aired shortly thereafter on computer screens throughout North America and the rest of the world. We lay down our thoughts on the show (hint: we liked it), new companion Martha Jones, various bits of ancillary promotion for the show, and our rampant speculation as to the nature of upcoming episodes, based on the tin fragments of scenes we've been spoon-fed thus far. And there's 12 more episodes to go! Huzzah!

Radio Free Skaro #27 - Eccleston's Era, part the first

After a week's delay due to illness on the part of both myself and Steven, we're back in fighting form with the first part of a retrospective of Christopher Eccleston's lone season as the good Doctor. His reign was the beginning of Who's new era, and we ponder our anticipation prior to the premiere of "Rose," how things have changed for the series as we hurtle towards the premiere of Season 3 (12 days, w00t w00t!, and the usual digressions and balderdash, including a taunting of Podshock and flaunting of our (quite) tenuous connection to the writer of "Dalek."

We also branch off into many a tangent, which I'm sure will provoke much debate, scolding and commentary on freyburg.com.

Bit of a different one...Steven and I were at the same place at the same time, so we decided to do a "live" two parter where we do commentary for Army of Ghosts and Doomsday. Up to you if we pulled it off, but here's part one of this epic experiment in audio audaciousness. Allons-y!

Steven and I get down to the crappier episodes of Season 2 of Dr. Who, with some slapping about of Love and Monsters (which I maintain ain't that bad) and Fear Her (terrible!) We also examine bad episodes from the Classic Who years, give a shout out to our fan Martin Frobisher, and reveal our upcoming "live" podcast in Edmonton..which will be the two of us doing a commentary track to the Season 2 finale. Neato! As per usual, the show can be heard on the web and downloaded through the feed, or via this direct link.

Radio Free Skaro #6

Yes, Steven and I managed to juggle our schedules and get RFS Numero Six out the door tonight. Much gushing about the Impossible Planet and Satan pit two-parter, some kvetching about DVD vendors and their lack of Who respect, and formative plans for a live episode in a couple of weeks time, as I will be in Edmonton over the weekend. We might even have to videotape that one, just to be total dorks.

Just a few days after the delayed episode 4 comes episode 5, where we discuss "The Idiot's Lantern," then veer off into the many and various ways Dr. Who has addressed social issues of the day. Somehow we managed to break the 34 minute mark with this rich vein of discussion.

The oft delayed Radio Free Skaro #4!

Again with the technical difficulties! First we had a file up and die on us, then Steven's microphone generated a truly astounding amount of hum. Through it all we soldiered on, and now bring you the delayed but complete Radio Free Skaro, episode 4. We discuss the Girl in the Fireplace and the first Cybermen two-parter, then veer wildly off course and talk about webisodes, the Internet, and why there won't be any new Gallifrey episodes (and whether or not that's a good thing). At any rate, thanks for waiting and putting up with our technical troubles, and hope you all enjoy the podcast. We'll try to get #5 out sometime this weekend.

Delayed by wonky email, cut off by flaky Internet connections, and menaced by a hornet during the podcast......this one was a bit of a slog. But have no fear, Whovians, Warren and Steven have battled it out and present episode 3 of Radio Free Skaro to you in all its insect killing, Who discussing glory. We covered Tooth and Claw and School Reunion, and then veered off into touching Classic Who moments and cool death scenes.
